Smiles will once again be visible at Lakewood High School as mask mandates are lifted. On Friday, February 18, the official mask mandate was lifted for all schools in Jefferson County. While many people are excited to be able to see their friends’ faces again, others are questioning if this is a smart choice.

There is some speculation as to whether or not this mandate should have been lifted; COVID-19 is a very prominent and contagious disease. There are still lots of people at risk. According to the CDC, as of February 16, the current 7-day moving average of daily new cases in the United States is 121,665. Some are angry and upset and believe that this choice was a mistake.

However, there has been a mask mandate for almost two years. Because of this, it’s understandable that people want to see their friends’ faces. Teachers have also gone through two years of teaching without fully seeing what their students' faces look like.

“I like not having the obligation to wear a mask. However, I understand that some people are uncomfortable with the change due to personal limitations on health. But I do not think teachers or students are making a political statement by choosing to wear a mask or not, rather making the choice that best suits them.” says junior Montana Joy.

“I don't have an opinion of the mandate being lifted. At first, I was a little skeptical, but the curve of cases is still going down, so it doesn’t bother me,” says junior Madden.

“I am proud of the students who choose to wear a mask voluntarily, but I think that the mask mandate should not have been lifted so soon. It is going to make numbers go up and a new mandate is going to happen. The lifting of the mask mandate is temporary,” says senior Shauna Duffey.

The mandate being lifted is subject to lots of personal opinions. It is up to you completely if you want to wear a mask or not. If you are high risk, have a family that is a high risk, or you are worried about getting COVID-19, wear a mask. If you decide not to wear one, that is your choice and it is perfectly fine. Being an LHS student offers everyone a choice.
